SOPFB is open on Saturdays for folks to pick up food. The Executive Director is the only full-time staff person and the phone is her number. She just doesn't have time to call everyone back, so that is why their message says "we won't call back." In addition to providing food to individuals for their pets, SOPFB regularly delivers food to shelters who call them because they have more animals than they have food. I don't know what the person's situation was that wasn't able to get food. It could be they needed food at a time that the Save Our Pets Foodbank didn't have enough food themselves to give out. They are still open and have helped over 3500 pets so far and given out 30,000 lbs of food.

Are you serious? I don't use them myself, but now I'm worried. Let me tell you a little background on how this post came about. A fellow freelancer here in Atlanta (where Save Our Pets is located) is doing some work for them to create that Father's Day Campaign I talked about in this post. She passed the info about it on to her network and I blogged about it to try and raise awareness. I did check out the site first, and recall seeing that they give away food every Saturday during a certain window of time.

I don't want to post any false info here on Life and Times so I just called the SOPFB. Their message said they are open Saturdays from 10am to 12pm (I missed them by 2.5 hours. Darn!) and the very end of their message says "we won't call back." That could be suspicious, or could just be that they left all the info we need in the message and don't have staff to answer calls.

Jamie, I'll contact my freelancer friend and confirm with her that they are still operating. Thanks for alerting me to this!

Do you know if Save Our Pets is still helping people?

I got an anonymous message through my contact form from someone who's been unable to get help from them for two months in a row. My blog is so new I didn't even know it had been indexed anywhere.

I'm asking a couple bloggers who might know something before I shoot my mouth off and get in trouble. :)

That story is tragic. Poor little kitty. it must have been so scared. It makes me sick to think about it.

You know, I was in Boston last year and one thing I noticed that the people were incredibly fricking nice. My shuttle driver actually stopped and bought me a cup of coffee at Dunkin Donuts and then when the credit card machine at another place wouldn't work, the manager gave me free food because he didn't want to inconvenience me. So while that thing with the kitten is just godawful, we all know there are a lot of good Bostonians to make up for that bad apple.

Also, I knew my readers must be animal people. We're the nicest, most well read people in the world. ;)

That picture is perfect for the Bad Cat calendar - I can see the captions already. Poor kitty - bad Papi!

On the news here last night in Boston they showed the most adorable Calico kitten who was 8 weeks old and found traumatized in one of those big mail drop boxes on the city street. Some cruel soul had dumped her in there Friday after the last mail pickup and she was in there until Monday morning when the mailman came by and promptly took her to the local MSPCA. They have named her Postina and I'm sure she will find a great home very quickly. Lucky for her it wasn't a hot weekend. The MSPCA used the story to remind people that it is never OK to abandon a pet and they can drop unwanted ones off any time no questions asked.

We support all kinds of animal causes locally - including the Tufts Veterniary Hospital fund which covers emergency care for pets whose owner's can't afford it. Excellent post today - thanks for encouraging others.

I'm so glad to hear it. Give Molly a good scratching for me!

We're big pet lovers here. My husband volunteers with rescue kittens at Georgia's only no-kill shelter and I try to give $ whenever I can. People having to give up their pets is one of those issues that will lead to overcrowded shelters or turning them out into the streets, etc. and just blow up into madness if it isn't stopped.
