Don't feel bad. You provided a great resource with your handout. You covered a lot of ground I had never thought about, and I'm sure I'll be able to use it to help a client someday soon!

I totally agree with your strategy of helping as many people as possible, and think that that is an important distinction for an author to make. It truly can mean the difference between being timid to promote yourself and promoting yourself vigorously.

Thanks for stopping by!

Jenn,

Thanks for the comments! I actually felt rather bummed out after the seminar - trying to say way too much in a short time. So I'm delighted that you were encouraged!

I do think that examining our fears of marketing can help us a lot. If I write a book that I think can help a lot of people, I'm not helping them much if I fail to get it into their hands! If I apply to my marketing efforts the same motives that drove me to write the book, I can catch fire for the marketing process!

Agreed. And I think that is a matter of perception. Many freelance writers go into their business thinking of themselves as writers rather than business people. A lot of them (me included) are used to writing subjective things that people critique (i.e. fiction, essays, etc.) Of course you're going to feel trepidation about selling your personal work.

But, on the other hand, if you think of yourself as a business owner who has something - persuasive power with words - that other people need in order to help them make money or accomplish whatever it is they are trying to accomplish, then you are no longer selling your personal work, you're selling a product. It's a small mind trick, but an important one!

Always looking for new writing conferences near home (N. Al) so any that go on over there in Georgia I would love to know more about.

As for promotion, I think that if you believe in the product it is a little easier. The problem is that most writers do not truly believe in self and ultimately that IS the product.
