Hey Jenn,
Your blog is so interesting and helpful to me. I am new to blogging and would love to someday land a freelance job. How can we connect through our blogs?

Hi Kari! Thanks so much for finding me! I put your blog in my RSS reader and just want to say that I find your enthusiasm inspiring. I volunteered at a battered women’s shelter during college and it was an interesting experience, to say the least. Please feel free to contact me anytime if you have any questions (or triumphs, or setbacks, or gripes) in your freelance writing life. And don’t worry – it’s going to be awesome!

Hey Jenn, just wanted to show my appreciation for the information you’ve been sharing on your site, I’ve found it both interesting and informative. I’m still having quite a time getting started, mostly because I find so many things interesting and as a result am still figuring out what area of writing to focus on. I’ve got a few questions up my sleeve as well, but I think I’ll reread your posts to make sure I don’t ask anything that’s already been answered or said. Keep up the good work, love and respect!

Hi Joe,
Wow, thanks for the compliments. I’m flattered that you’re finding this info informative. And now I feel kind of bad that my writing schedule has fallen off this year. (I notice that my blog posting is directly inversely correlated with how busy I am, and I am mobbed at the moment.)
That’s not to say that I don’t love answering questions and trying to help new writers find their feet. I relied so much on seasoned freelancer writers when I got my start. If I hadn’t, I would probably have given up and gone back to the miserable corporate world. So ask away if you have any questions!
Love and respect back at you!

Hopefully your being mobbed with the good kind of work in that case (the type that pays!). So here’s my first big question:
Is it wiser to have a separate blog for different areas of interest, or does it make more sense to have one big blog with different sections for each area?
For instance, right now I’m working on a blog for dreaming, one for finding my way as a freelance writer, and one related to having a healthy lifestyle.
Second: I’ve started out with Blogger because I already have a Gmail account, but I see you use Wordpress. Is there a good reason for me to switch to Wordpress? (considering I hope to bring in some revenue with ads)
I can’t thank you enough for your help. I feel like I’m stuck on a raft out at sea in a storm, and your tidbits of wisdom are the lighthouse guiding me back to shore.

Hi Joe,
Sorry it took me a few days to get back to you. I wanted to have time to give your questions my full attention!
First, I think it is infinitely wiser to have a separate blog for separate areas of interest – mostly for technical reasons. First, separating blogs will make it easier to find each of your blogs SEO-wise. Plus, Google tends to rank blogs higher when they stick to a theme. Plus, think of your audience. While there are plenty of people who read about as single topic, what are the odds that they all like the same three disparate topics? A lot of different varied sections just breeds confusion.
If you hope to bring in ad revenue I would self-host my blog via Wordpress or some other blogging platform (i.e. buy a domain name). I have no idea if you can put Google ads on your Blogger account, but even if you can, Google still has control of that domain/account and can make changes at their whim. Plus, owning your own domain makes you look more professional and like you care about your blog/business. Finally, don’t rely on Google AdSense for ad revenue. If you want to make money from your blog, recommend signing up with affiliate programs and – when you start getting enough popularity – courting private advertisers. I recommend the 31 Days to Build a Better Blog Challenge to any new bloggers.

So yep, that’s my best advice there! Let me know if I was confusing and I’ll try to clarify. And hey… peace and love!

Hey Jen,
Many many thanks for your opinion on these topics! Your reply relating to whether to have multiple blogs for different areas of interest makes a lot of sense, so I will definitely be making separate blogs.
I see your point about allowing Google to own the domain, however I was poking around the settings on Blogger and there is a way to export your Google Blog to a privately owned domain. Is this the same thing Wordpress allows you to do, thus making them equal in this regard? Or perhaps I missed something.
Anywho, I’m going to check out the ProBlogger article you linked and get back to work. As usual, you rock. Peace, love, and happy blogging!
